We were a couple of Kiwis escaping the winter. We'd been to Maui in previous and had heard about the Gorge, so we needed to satisfy our curiosity. Swell City is on the Washington side of the Columbia River. The wind can be here first thing, allowing for a pre-work sail session for those on Dawn Patrol. Swell City is a small launch area, popular with the older guys who have some sort of a club going here. It has a tricky get-in and not many car parks. Those needing a lunchtime sail can then try The Hatch, also on the Washington side. It has an even trickier get in with a rock which is submerged if the river level is up. There are plenty of helping hands for those struggling with the boulder scramble to get out. Our most favourite spot would probably be Doug's Beach - popular with the locals looking for an after work session.
