I forget what it was called, but there was a study done where they gave the subjects "bad news" about things they were not expecting to be too bad, while monitoring their brain activity. For example they asked if the subject knew how likely they were to develop cancer etc, and then gave them worse numbers than the subjects expected. What they found was that a large portion of the subjects did not process the information like you would normally. Literally going in one ear and out the other.
