MW DX: WBBR New York 1130 kHz received in Germany on Etón E5

WBBR New York on medium wave 1130 kHz received in Germany on 5 March 2010 at 05:45 UTC using my Lextronix (Etón) E5 portable world band receiver and 1x1 m homebrew loop antenna. Distance: 6175 km.

While the studios of Bloomberg Radio are in New York City, the actual location of the 50 kW transmitter is at Carlstadt, New Jersey.

Those smaller radios are very amazing,aren't they ?! To give you an example,I owned a Radio Shack DX-399 & while residing in Brooklyn,New York,on 12/17/00,I received WLOC 1150kHz Munfordville,Kentucky with a night power of only 61 watts--no more powerful than a common lightbulb ! When I started MW DXing in 2000,the DX-399 was my very first receiver & I should've kept it ! Today,Radio Shack manufactures nothing but pure shit--a very far cry of the company it once was.

@East180thStreetYard The Eton E5 together with its sibling Degen DE1103 (known as Kaito KA1103 in the US) is an outstanding portable! Its performance on MW is almost incredible and it's also truly excellent on FM and SW. My unit has been equipped with narrow filters for increased DX performance (80 kHz FM and 2.8 kHz AM).

BTW your DX-399 was originally made by Sangean - it's a rebadged ATS-606 which got good reviews during its lifetime.

WOW ! A great catch.WBBR is a 50kw station.I used to reside in NYC;currently living in Flint,MI.Detroit also has 1130 kHz,but probably nearly impossible to get because it's not on the coast and I don't know the power level & antenna pattern offhand.I never had any luck getting MW stations outside North America.

@East180thStreetYard Thanks! WBBR is one of the easiest North American MW stations to receive here because 1130 kHz is right between two European channels and there is very little interference since Croatia on 1134 stops at midnight.

DXers in the UK and Scandinavia can receive stations as far away as Seattle or even Alaska. That's something I can almost forget about because I live too far inland. I'll try to do some mobile MW DXing with a 100 m antenna though, maybe I can catch something nice.

Me too mister!! Probably the best MW distance I have ever seen 5 stars from me too! I wouldn't mind seeing that loop antenna or at least learning how to build one. That is impressive!

@globalswgetter Thanks! There are considerably larger MW distances possible though, watch out for my videos of HLAZ Korea, Family Radio Taiwan and VOA Philippines. ;-)  My best MW distance ever was Radio Corporación from Chile, by the way (over 12000 km).

Building a loop antenna is neither particularly difficult nor expensive. There are many instructions available on the web, simply ask Google. The material for my loop cost me the equivalent of $ 10 in 1996.

@senderjaeger Yes,I'm aware that the DX-399 is actually a Sangean,and as I recall,both of these units had narrow filters.My ATS-909 was one of the last of the old models produced & it has a blue logo instead of the red one.I had another blue logo one & sold it to Universal Radio because the AM RF gain control was a bit off-center.I dislike the tunning knobs that Sangean is known for because they stick out way too much & can be easily damaged & placing them in their cases is a big problem.

@East180thStreetYard Correction.When I was residing in New York City,I did catch YVKS 750kHz Caracas,Venezuela quite often.Many times it would overide WSB 750kHz Atlanta,GA despite YVKS being more far away.This is the only station I'm aware of that I've ever received outside North America.
