A day spent watching the races and collisions, at the Philadelphia Dragon Boat Festival, on Saturday, October 1st, 2011, by Temple University students.
@fatelvistheking as a paddler, you keep your attention in the boat to maintain focus and to keep timing with your team. When I race, I have no idea where I am in relation to the other boats and I'll bet most of the paddlers in that boat had no idea they were off course. Trust is put in the steersman to guide the boat and respond to situations. In this case, the steersman should've called for "hold water" (stop) as soon as he lost control instead of veering across two (!!) lanes.
I dont understand it looks like the one boat rowed right into the other if they saw they were heading towards the othter boat wouldnt they stop rowing ?
Thanks for posting this video / pictures. First i'll like to say, my team totally enjoyed the experience and we had a great time! We'll be back again next year. And, the crash did delayed the event, but you can't blame anyone - unexpected accidents will happen in any sporting event. just my 2 cent, nice job everyone. Philly rocks!
1:37 to see actual race.

And by the way...Festival management and organization sucked!!!! While it was fun to be with the teams etc, as festivals go it was a joke.

Looks like the steer slipped into the boat.
Fatelvis--the technical term is "paddling"
The steer controls everything, issues commands etc...paddlers intently focus on the paddling
