Beyond the Frame: Alternative Perspectives on the War on Terrorism

This DVD compilation offers a series of stand-alone interviews with some of the most prominent scholars, experts, and activists in political and social thought that critique mainstream media's coverage of the war on terrorism. This accessible format is designed to allow educators to bring the voices of these cultural analysts directly into their classrooms.

Launched in September 2001, Beyond the Frame is a series of interviews with leading scholars, experts, and activists offering alternative perspectives on the 9/11 tragedy and its aftermath. Originally a web-only project, the interviews were(and continue to be) available free of charge via streaming video through MEF's website. The project was a response to MEF's alarm at the dangerously restricted range of views presented by the mainstream media, largely confined to the opinions of political elites and a commercial frame dependent on advertisers and ratings.

Featuring some of the most prominent names in political and social thought, the site has been accessed to date by tens of thousands of people seeking alternatives to mainstream media coverage in a post-9/11 world. Created in response to educator requests, the DVD will allow these interviews to be shown in the classroom.

Featuring Interviews with: Seth Ackerman, Belquis Ahmadi, Joan Blades, Maliha Chishti, Noam Chomsky, Jo Commerford, Kevin Danaher, Cynthia Enloe, Henry Giroux, Janine Jackson, Robert Jensen, Sut Jhally, Darryl Kimball, Michael Kimmel, Mhahsa Khanbabai, Naomi Klein, Manning Marable, Mark Crispin Miller, Bernie Sanders, Ritu Sharma, Vandana Shiva, and Alisa Solomon.

  • 80% of the news we see are biased. Israel, Colombia, Iraq, Greece, etc are countries that have to be seen in person to understand what is happening there. Don t sit and judge from CNN, Reuters, etc. They have an agenda (a money agenda, that is) - bad news sell more than the truth. Cheers!

By the way, I am from Colombia!!

  • Israel does NOT need the Aid anymore-besides it was used for survival in the beggining. You have to get with the modern times, expand your horizons and view Israel in Perspective. You are just focusing on the biased news you see on CNN. Investigate who are the major partners of CNN.

  • You mean to tell me that Israel has no achievements? that every major tech company does NOT have an office in Israel? That it s economy (GDP) does not equal that of much larger European counterparts? That Israel is just sitting there waiting for the US to bail its rear end out? Sorry to break the news to you, but you have a very obtuse way of viewing the world! Israelis are busy growing their economy, their culture, they are sick of fighting, and do want peace-and people like u don t help

  • @Carl9449

I think you have it turned around. Israel is the kid who has a really strong older brother that will give you guns so you can go to your school and shoot the other kids. And then act suprised when the other kids use some desperate idiotic measure to retaliate.

  • Seth,

When we were all in school, there was always a child in class who happened to be good at everything. They called him the nerd, they harrassed him and even bullied him. Kids that used to sit next to him, instead of immitating him, they called him names and plotted attacks against him. We all lived that. Well my dear friend, that kid is the Israel today: A democratic nation, the only one in the 1/2 East. I wonder if her neighbors want to destroy her or try to be like her!

  • this is my Man, Seth is our future, men and women such as him; Fair is Fair and cannot be questioned

  • did this kid sell out in the beginning of the interview or earlier?

  • Handsome kid. Usually full of shite.

  • @gossieuk Well said. It's the difference between explanation and exoneration. After 9/11 in the US to ask 'why' was considered treasonous itself. People forget that behind atrocities such as terrorist attacks there are usually grievances, and that regardless of the tactics, those grievances may have some legitimacy. It goes for Chechens, Palestinians, Tamils, or Nepal Maoists.

  • @xExekut3x On the other hand, we could be not so smart and listen to someone who groups everyone as "Jihadists", although it was exactly the Jihadi Movement that was condmening 9/11-tactics and offered Bush help with the hunt on Al-Qaeda. What makes one smart is not how fast they can label something, but how many books, articles, analysis, reporting and academic studies they operate with.
