Joey didn't get the idea to start Stars Go Dim or ask Lester and Mike to join. Joey was asked to write songs for their side project. At first there were many writers writing for this project. Later on Joey was added to the band.

Musically yes. But where did Joey get the idea to ask Lester and Kalel to join Stars Go Dim? I doubt the fact that his touring with Pillar to promote the For the Love of the Game tour was anything but coincedence. Plus, the fact that SGD hails from Kansas and that their drummer Lester calls Gardener, KS his home made it easy for him to transition to the band full time after he made his departure from Pillar.

Technically speaking, Stars Go Dim was birthed out of Pillar if you think about it. Joey Avalos joined Pillar as their second guitarist on their For the Love of the Game tour. Three of the four members of SGD are Joey, Kalel, and Lester.
