Identity
by Julio Noboa Polanco
Let them be as flowers,
always watered, fed, guarded, admired,
but harnessed to a pot of dirt.
I'd rather be a tall, ugly weed,
clinging on cliffs, like an eagle
wind-wavering above high, jagged rocks.
To have broken through the surface of stone,
to live, to feel exposed to the madness
of the vast, eternal sky.
To be swayed by the breezes of an ancient sea,
carrying my soul, my seed,
beyond the mountains of time or into the abyss of the bizarre.
{ I'd rather be unseen, and if
then shunned by everyone,
than to be a pleasant-smelling flower,
growing in clusters in the fertile valley,
where they're praised, handled, and plucked
by greedy, human hands. }
I'd rather smell of musty, green stench
than of sweet, fragrant lilac.
If I could stand alone, strong and free,
I'd rather be a tall, ugly weed.
That poem; little words; sums up life, and how we should live it.
We, as equestrians, reach so hard, so much, to become like our
idols. Take a look back at them. The ones who are on top are
sometimes the ones that we d o n ' t need to be like. There are
some people who get to be where they are because of money,
opportunity, and being spoiled. There are some who are just
so crazy rich that they can buy 100k eq. horses all the time, and
not really even care if they and that horse trust each other, or
have even a smudge of a bond. They don't have time to take from
their so called l i v e s to actually put the effort in. They live our
dream but don't have time to take to reach theirs. It's rather sad
actually. They become angry. All of the anger builds up over
time and they just cant let it out. They have no one. They drove
them away with their continuous success. The anger is finally
let out on those who are 'weaker' than they are; this is called h a t e .
It's miserable. So live to be w h o e v e r you want to be
and don't let fame or fortune get in your way. Don't let
yourself be plucked by g r e e d y h u m a n h a n d s ;;
Let yourself thrive in being y o u. Because nobody else
can be y o u. Put everything aside and just t h r i v e....
'I'd rather be a tall, ugly weed.."
Thank you so much! I have to memorize this poem for class so hearing it over and over makes it better for me to memorize!
