Answers to questions you may have:
Q: Do I know what I'm doing?
A: No. This is the first time I've done this, and probably the last.
Q: Did I know I was stepping on the most valuable parts and throwing delicious parts away?
A: Not a clue. I'm a scallop fisherman, and a part time one at that. The Monk fish come up with the scallops, die on deck in the sun. Towards the end of the trip sometimes we take some tails to make a few extra bucks. They are by-catch, not what we are looking for.
Q: That sure looks dirty, is the place where my food comes from unsanitary?
A: This may be news to some, but the bottom of the ocean is covered in sand, rocks, silt, muck and even dead creatures. The scallops live on the bottom of the ocean. The crap you see on the deck, is the crap that covers the bottom of Georges Bank. It's not exactly a sterile environment (because it's full of living things) but by no means is it unsanitary. Nothing is left out long enough to rot, the scallops are frozen very shortly after they are cut, same with my poor fish friend here.
A: Why couldn't you just leave that Monk fish alone, if you're wasting so much?
Q: I was either going to throw the whole body back dead, or just most of it. Either way, they come up with the scallops, die in the sun, and then either get put to some use (however marginal) or delight the birds and bottom feeders.
Q: "If I personally attack this guy via a semi-anonymous internet post don't I make a contribution towards stemming the global depletion of ocean life?"
A: I wish it were that simple. If only everyone could just personally attack me and thereby guarantee that the Cod would be abundant once more, salmon would swim freely in all our rivers and streams, and we would bear witness to the dawning of the Age of Aquarius. But so far as I can tell all that these attacks marginally decrease are my faith in humanity, but no real harm done, it wasn't that big to begin with. If you really want to help rebuild the fishery stocks, make life more abundant in the seas and insure the continued survival or humans and the many species we depend on and impact then get involved with one of the many real organizations doing just that. I personally have done work with and for the Fisheries Survival Fun (www.thefsf.org) which is particularly concerned with the sustainability of the Atlantic Seas Scallop stock. I know it's more fun to fling feces--we're monkeys after all--but sadly it doesn't get results.
Q: "Why didn't he answer my question?"
A: Because I didn't know you had a question. Ask and I'll do my best to respond.

  • you sir are infact a gentlemen and i wish people would stop hating you for what life is. you explained why you were cutting the monkfish and people should read that and realize "oh wait.. so you arent a asshole" i get so mad when people say that you are a asshole for just for cutting a already dead monkfish.

  • @aquawarrior10 good lord, thank god. your single comment of understanding has done a great deal to negate the aggressive ignorance i've mostly gotten as a response to posting this video. my many thanks to you.

  • i hate assholes

  • now are you, sir, suggesting i am an asshole, for i can assure you i am no such thing, but a gentleman the likes of which you may bot be accustomed to, perhaps it is the alien nature of my complete gentility that baffles you so into decrying such balderdash, i hope you're not a fisherman, cause boy am i doing a lot to keep you in business, that is on a legal and financial level, as i have stated before i am no real fisherman

  • What you guys said..

  • in reply, we didn't care about monk fish. we were out for scallops and took maybe 150 lbs of monk fish tail, really they just go to waste on the boat. this was the first time i'd been asked to do this and the knife was real dull as you can probably see.

  • Not a bad first time cutting a Monk tail, with a dull knife,I was a scallop fisherman from Nova Scotia (Digby) , going back at it in the new year, and have done alot worse than that trying to cut tails, so good job , it also blew me away to hear you are getting 3$ a pound , when I left Digby 10 years ago I think we were getting 75 cents a pound ,anyhow cant wait to get back at it , I am wishing you and your crew the best of fishing , and to all the haters and whiners, just try doing the job !!!!

  • why are all those monkfish wasted like that? Yes I read that they are incidental to your scallop fishing but would not someone buy them from you when you get in if you took care of them and did not let them lay on the deck in the sun? That is not responsible at all.

  • @NicholasEnterprises they are good, called poor mans lobster here. I used to have it each week at a restaurant i worked at. only the tail can be eaten. i see the birds are happy too ! and nothing was wasted
