Dark License to Kill (DLTK) is the made-up fifth difficulty in GoldenEye. In DLTK, you maximize the enemy statistics in 007 mode:

Enemy health: 1000%
Enemy damage: 1000%
Enemy accuracy: 100%
Enemy reaction speed: 100%

With these settings, enemies take about 10 headshots to kill, they usually kill you in one hit, they rarely miss, and they react quickly.

I just beat this level today (Depot and Jungle were from a few weeks ago). It's pretty hard; of the levels I've done so far, I'd put it below only Caverns. To save ammo, I did a lot of chopping, so I cut that out for this video. The unabridged version is here:

Most of the things before the protection are pretty straightforward. Once I get to the box guards, I creep forward until I can barely see their heads and then shoot them. It seems to help that they're left-handed; even though they see me, their shots don't hit me because of the wall on my right (their left). After chopping another set of guards, I use a mine to blow up three guards in the locker room through a wall. This helps me out later. I chop another set of guards and blow up the last guard in the locker room. A few guards and mainframes later, I get the body armor, which allows me to survive one hit.

I learned about the protection strategy from Ilari Pekkala's run. If you stand in a certain part of the room, the body armor guards that go after you will get stuck (hopefully). If you stand up, they can shoot you through the glass, so I stay crouched. You may be wondering why I shot the tables before the protection. I shot some of the tables four times so that I could blow them up with one shot later, which can help when there are two enemies shooting Natalya at once. I only ended up blowing up one table in this run. In hindsight, it may be better to leave the tables with full "health" to act as shields against any body armor guards that may come down the stairs.

Getting to the elevator at the end is tricky. Before finishing this run, I sometimes died before even making it up the stairs, and now I know why. After I run up the stairs, you can see that the two body armor guards who were stuck behind the glass are in the area where Natalya was, even though they shouldn't be able to get there without using the stairs (try it out with invincibility; as long as you're looking at them, you can't get them to run through the gaps where the glass was). I think that they must have warped through the glass while I wasn't looking. If you keep looking at the glass, they won't do that, making the end of the level quite a bit safer. In the last room, I was shot by Trevelyan, but I lived thanks to the body armor.

With Control under my belt, I have three levels left: Silo, Streets, and Train. I haven't tried any of them yet, but my tentative plan is to do Train first, then do Streets, then see about Silo.

  • I think you should have left in the ingame music. The gameplay's excellent, but leaving in the music would have been a nice touch.

  • Thanks. I play without the music, though, so I can't add it back in (unless I take the music and artificially overlay it with the recorded audio, which probably wouldn't work very well).

  • @Cheeseoman I see; it's just that this level has a very nice soundtrack.

  • I agree with @JMokan Very impressive indeed!

  • These are truly remarkable. I used to love this game as a kid. I'll admit; I've never seen this game pushed to the limit like this. I never heard of Dark License to Kill until your videos. Truly impressive.
