Death and life are in the power of the tongue, says Proverbs. Early on in the marriage, Grace shared a secret with Pastor Mark from her past. As he confesses, his response to her was not biblical, loving, or gracious, and his words often brought death and not life in the marriage. Subsequently, Pastor Mark's heart became bitter and in his preaching, he adopted a harsher, more chauvinistic tone, for which he repents and asks forgiveness.

This clip is excerpted from the sermon "New Marriage, Same Spouse," part 1 of Mars Hill Church's Real Marriage sermon series, based off the book of the same name by Pastor Mark and Grace Driscoll. It was preached by Pastor Mark at Mars Hill Downtown Bellevue and released on January 15.

  • @Dolphincrossing Friend, the bible says "confess your trespasses to one another..." (James 5:6). It doesn't say "keep your sins a secret" or "only confess the ones that aren't super dark." I too came from a very dark place. The Light is made that much more glorious when we see how it washes away even the darkest of things. I've confessed my deep darkness, and there is freedom. I pray freedom for you my friend.

  • I really respect Mark. However, while I understand the idea of confessing past sin to eachother, it might not always be a good idea.I could never be married in his church because I was saved from such a dark place that I would never tell people all that I've done sexual or otherwise.Had Grace told Mark what she'd done, he would have missed out on his whole marriage with her, their ministry together, and their kids.Sometimes the past is better left alone.God says he forgets our sin, we should too.

  • This man is brilliant

  • ...I had a dream in which I saw some things that shook me to my core. I saw in painful detail Grace sinning sexually during a senior trip she took after high school when we had just started dating. It was so clear it was like watching a film — ...Yes, she confessed, it was. Grace started weeping and trying to apologize for lying to me, but I honestly don’t remember the details of the conversation, as I was shell-shocked. Had I known about this sin, I would not have married her.” (p. 6, 11-12)
