9 July 2011. Why do cats like to bring you presents? Don't get me wrong, I love gifts. What girl doesn't? But when in the form of dead - or not so dead - lizards, mice, moles, snakes and now a very live, squeaking, flapping bat, I'm not feeling very thankful. Especially as our cat, Lucca, delights in bringing all his trophy prizes - alive & dead - to our inner sanctuary, the bedroom. Tonight, just as I was dozing asleep Lucca comes charging in. It's obvious from the squealing, flapping noise he's not alone. I could tell it wasn't our bsby kitten, Sienna, either. I fly out of bed, flipping on lights, grabbing glasses & shoving my feet jnto shoes all in one go, whilst yelling at Lucca. Sure enough it's not the kitten, but instead a very live bar. Eeek! I like bats just about as much as I like snakes. Meaning, totally, utterly petrified. Just great! There goes that lovely relaxed, calm "it's still Saturday and I can sleep late tomorrow" sense of well-being. Within a flash, I'm calling the husband ( who is living the life of Riley with his parents in Devon this weekend) to get some manly advice. All the time I'm dodging Lucca who is doing his level best to present me with his prize. Eeeek! Finally after following Steve's oh-so-irritatingly-calm advice, I finally dispatched the bat into the wild after several failed attempts. Honestly, I'm shocked I didn't have a heart-attack as I could literally feel my blood pressure rising sky-high and the adrenalin flooding my body with every close encounter with the beastie. It didn't help matters that Lucca was trying to re-capture the squeaking bat all the while I was trying to capture it with a bucket. Can't believe I managed it. So after successfully showing the bat the door, I double-check all doors & windows to make sure all are closed. Then push the damn cats out the bedroom & slammed the door shut. I'm exhausted, but still strung out. I don'g feel pride in having faced my fears nor in having gotten rid of the critter. Just fel very tired. Regardless, I know sleep is going to prove elusive tonight.
