Data can be held in jpegs. In linux (maybe Unix in general), the "outguess" program does just this. In fact, I can't get it to store data in anything else, which is annoying.

I use a method I figured, where I have any kind of file, I open it in Hex Workshop, and I edit the actual binary coding. You see, if you don't make the binary resembling RGB standard patterns, it is stored in the image binary itself, but not the picture that it displays. All file types boil down to 1s and 0s and that's where I'm at, not at the GUI 4 levels up.

Cant u just do it with a BNP and then rename it to Jpeg and u got a jpeg watermarked? xD

BMPs are a lot larger than JPGs, I'd rather keep it in its native format
