Belgrade, the beautiful capital of Serbia, has a population of 1.6 million and a history of over 2,300 years. The old town is built on a ridge next to an enormous citadel which overlooks the meeting point of two of Europes major rivers - the Sava and the Danube. The current historic center was mostly built in the 19th century, when Belgrade was under Austrian control, and many of its major buildings reflect the influence of that period.
