Todays reactors known as 'Generation II' contribute 31% of Europe's total electricity production. The most recent evolution of this technology can be found in today's third generation nuclear plants, such as those under construction in Finland and France. The Euratom research programme is looking into advanced fourth generation designs. The appeal of these 'Generation IV' reactors lies in their improved credentials in terms of sustainability, both as regards their use of uranium resources and their ability to minimize waste production.
