President Obama has lifted restrictions on federal funding for research on embryonic stem cells, opening the way for potential cures and procedures. Some researchers are already making progress using adult cells as well as stem cells from umbilical cord blood -- uncontroversial because they do not involve destroying embryos. As VOA's Greg Flakus reports from Galveston, Texas, one research team is making progress on a treatment for people suffering from Type 1 diabetes.

  • i want to join them as a lab rat just heal me :(

  • After 6 months of offering stem cell therapy in combination with the venous angioplasty liberation procedure, patients of CCSVI Clinic have reported excellent health outcomes. Ms. Kasma Gianopoulos of Athens Greece, who was diagnosed with the Relapsing/Remitting form of MS in 1997 called the combination of treatments a “cure”. • This is awesome. A cure would save my parents so much money on medical supplies for me.

  • I hope thay find a cure this disease,But not for people like me who brought it on myself. But for children how get it at a very early age.I hope and pray

  • iv been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes since i was 2.. im 23 now and i have so many health problems because of it... i hope they find a cure before its too late for alot of ppl....

  • That is the other part of the equation. Encapsulation may yet do that.

The question is, where would we get the tissue to solve the supply shortage of transplantable tissue. That is what stem cell research would allow for. Once we can do this, we can get the transplantable tissue.

  • Even if they could create a new pancreas for IDDM patients. The autoimmunity will still damage and/ or destroy it. There needs to be a cure for autoimmunity for this to be a "real" cure for diabetes.

  • That's why they do research-- to see if it does.

  • either it does or it doesn't
