  • Fine recording, although I like Stan Getz's version even better. Hampton Hawes is great behind Gray!

  • It is just what you say.

The supporting performance of Hampton Hawes made this session a more splendid thing.

  • i like stan... but he couldnt shine wardells shoes

  • Wardell Gray was one of the only if not the only sax player to ever appear on the same recording as Charlie Parker. On the piece I am thinking of (possibly Stupendous, not sure) his solo is smoother than Parker's.

  • Great stuff!

  • not alot known about wardell .but he was a dam fine player.along with the wonderful hamp hawes.plenty of stories about wardells demise drugs and gangsters.i would like to know the real one.thanks.

  • I love it! very nice

  • @flatbackbass Wardell Gray was put in an unmarked grave in the Vegas dessert after beating Mobsters out of dope money...

  • hampton n wardell - these bad axmen need to be better known. thanx to all u who listen n 'preciate this magical music

  • @Modes9 Yeah, Lennie Tristano wrote a new line on the chords of this song: "Lennie's Pennies". Go and listen!

  • @flatbackbass - You can research thru wikipedia, and Gray died of a broken neck, around Las Vegas. Don't know where his tomb is located - possibly in his hometown. Of course he made excellent recordings w/Bird and others, and his style could be very-unique.

  • HEY, is there any way you could put that film about Wardell on youtube????? I could help if possible, I have a VHS player & means to do hi-q transfer to DVD & vid file for youtube upload....

I discovered Gray through my searching for all of Dexter Gordon's recordings, and found his duets with Gray, and found their styles to be very similar in some ways; like them BOTH but really would like to know more about Gray.
