And there was a bear even taller than Artcodus, Ursus marintimus tyrannus, also known as the Pleistocene Polar Bear. Sources state this bear was over 13 feet tall and weighed 2,600 pounds. The largest bear in modern times was a Polar Bear shot in the 19th century that was 5' 5" tall at the shoulder, 11' 11" long and tall, and weighed 2,207 lbs.
P.S. Arctotherium was actually discovered in 1935. It just took 75 years for someone to actually bother studying this creature!

@N00bcrunch3r: Interesting. Thanks for that information. While most sources list the Arctodus as the largest, there is a recently discovered Argentine short-faced bear from the genus Arctotherium whose largest males, as you say, stood 11 ft. tall and weighed over a ton and a half.

I doubt you would say that about his ancestors.

at 8seconds he takes a bow and all haha

People probably throw the bear food when it does that.

hahaha funny!
Compared to other bears, they are quite docile unless attacked. Mothers will aggressively defend cubs, however. There have been no recorded fatalities caused by spectacled bears. This is quite a contrast to numerous deaths due to grizzlies, European brown bears, black bears, polar bears, and sloth bears.
Interestingly, they are the only living bear in the lineage of the giant short-faced bear -- the largest and fastest bear to have ever lived. Sadly, they are threatened with extinction.

No! The North American Short-Faced Bear was not the largest bear to ever live. The largest bear ever was the Spectacle Bear's direct ancestor, the South American Short-Faced Bear, an 11 foot tall, 3,500 pound predator which had potential to be an elephant slayer.
