Bulk freighter Wilfred Sykes was launched at Lorain, Ohio in 1949; it is 678 feet long, and the first lake freighter to burn oil. The Edmund Fitzgerald was a similar boat which sunk in a storm on Lake Superior in 1975 with a loss of 29 men.

  • I really hope I get to get video of her someday.

  • Worked on her... she was a beauty, a floating museum built in 1949. Engine room was a blast. A real steamship!

  • First freighters on the lakes that burned fuel oil were the Henry Ford II and the Benson Ford with diesel engines in 1925. The Sykes, one of the prettiest freighters ever, was the first on the lakes to burn #6 fuel oil or bunker C as fuel for her steam turbines.

  • could sit and watch them all day long, and never get any work done...lol
