Artist: The Comes
Title: Ningen Gari (人間す守り, Human Harvest)
Track: 8 of 11
Album: No Side
Year: 1984

The best description I ever heard of The Comes was "Estrogenocide"; their female lead vocalist, Chitose, would push her guts out of her esophagus with every hellacious, blood-curdling shriek. Other members of the Tokyo-based hardcore outfit went on to form the legendary Lip Cream (type "Lip Cream - Ruteitsuku" in your search bar for another nice Japanese hardcore treat/terror). As much as I love Lip Cream, "No Side" is easily the best material anyone in this group ever produced -- before the group disbanded, they recorded "Power Never Die", a solid metallic release which, despite being far better than what most of their metal convert peers were barfing out at the time doesn't come close to capturing the (wo)manic insanity of "No Side". For those interested, there's also a two-disc collection of live material called "The Comes Live 1982-1984" available from a few Japanese outlets, as well as some great live material uploaded by other YouTube users (Check out "The Comes - Live '83" in particular to see the banshee herself in action -- and look at that hair!!) Outside of that, there's not much information out there on the band for the English speaker (I had to dig to even find out the lead vocalist's name) -- so if anyone has any more dirt on the guys, I'd love it if you could share! Oh, and if anyone has the lyrics to this album (particularly Kyuukyoku), translated or not, PLEASE hit me up with them!

Notes on this song: This one was really difficult to get a decent translation of... the best one I got was "The human protection which is done" and several others which insisted that the word "defense" was present. I went for "In Defense of Humans" because it can come across as either a humanitarian anthem or a semi-apologetic song about the difficulties of being a human being. If there's a Japanese whiz out there who could help me out with the translation, feel free to do so!

EDIT: Apparently I got an extra character jumbled in with the Japanese title, leading to a false translation. I believe this is closer to being accurate. It's something to the effect of "Human Hunting" or "Savage Harvest"... I took the middle-road and translated it as "Human Harvest". Sick title, anyway. Lord, translating this stuff is so difficult. I wish I wasn't such a perfectionist.

Information: Practically all I know about this release came from KillFromTheHeart.com , so you can thank them for all the hard work -- and I suggest checking them out if you want to get information about ANY late 70's-early 90's hardcore punk bands.
