The main problem with the John L. Smith era was this: awful secondary play, lack of poise or mental toughness, and the inability to stop opposing teams on 3rd down. Really, those were the problems. Everything else was just fine. If at least ONE of those things were fixed they would have been bowling every year. But I'm glad they weren't because then we would not have gotten Coach D.

It's a shame that this was basically the only bright spot on JLS's career at MSU. The sad thing is we had an explosive offense but we couldn't close games This same team couldn't close Michigan when they had the chance. JLS MSU teams were kind of like the Chargers of the 80's great offense but no D. This game of course was the exception and the Spartans played great on this day. Man the place went nuts on the block punt I clearly remember that from being at the stadium that day.
