Instrumentalist Gerry Niewood plays "Chase The Clouds Away" while performing with Chuck Mangione. The show was in Syracuse, NY in the late 90's. Gerry was aboard Continental flight 3407 that crashed near Buffalo, New York on February 12, 2009. He did not survive, but his spirit will. He was a great musician, and a great man and will be deeply missed! Filmed by Eric Malinowski

  • Thank You. Gerry will live on forever through his music.

  • Wasn't this song used for an afterschool special in the late 1970s?

  • The song was released in 1975 but I am not sure where it was used..... thanks for the comment!

  • I did not know Gerry Neiwood was on that flight. I found out Coleman Mellett, Chuck's guitarist, was on Continental flight 3407 too. What an awful loss. I can't imagine how devistated and depressed Chuck must feel.

In my mind Chasing The Clouds Away, Bellavia, and Children of Sanchez are the three best pieces of music on the three best albums Chuck ever recorded....but Chasing The Clouds Away truly has that transcendant quality that is capable of taking you somewhere else.

  • This is my favourite CM song by quite some margin... Too bad they play it in such a slow tempo here, and that the drummer straightened the original syncopated rythm. The guitar solo was a bit of a let-down too... I really enjoyed the little new twists from the bass player though.

  • @lachotajr I was lucky enough to see that show live twice! Loved their rendition of Legend of the One Eyed Sailor ion that same show!!!

  • Concord Blue Devils drum corp in 1975 used it for their finale! God bless them for a Chuck M favorite

  • a sad thing to lose gerry, had his first solo album from around 78-79, wonderful teacher as well
