Mark Dornford-May | South Africa 2006 | 1h26m | 35mm | English and Xhosa with English subtitles | 15
Africa in Motion (AiM) screening: Sunday 4 November 2007 at 4.00pm, Edinburgh Filmhouse
Set in the fictional African state of Judea, where violence, poverty and sectarianism are endemic, Son of Man is an adventurous and ambitious new interpretation of the Gospels by the South African theatre and film ensemble, Dimpho Di Kopane, who also produced U-Carmen eKhayelitsha. The country is invaded by a neighbouring dictatorship under the pretense of establishing democracy and peace through the means of summary executions and brutal massacres. As the civil war reaches a new level, a divine child - the Saviour - is born. As he grows up he sets out to redeem his people from oppression through an ethics of non-violent protest and solidarity.
Visually striking and featuring a powerful soundtrack incorporating inspirational traditional and protest songs, Son of Man is a daring tale of defiance and revolution with an ethical and political scope that reaches far beyond contemporary Africa.

We watched this movie in my Biblical studies class last year. I think it is an amazing interpretation of what Jesus' story may have looked like if he were born in a modern African context. It's not perfect. No film about Jesus is, but it made the Gospel story come alive for for the first time in my life! And for that, I am grateful.

@KJVBaptistGuy You are no one to judge others, even movie producers, that's up to the One above. This movie is very artistic and simply a modern remake, and because of such movies, someone's heart my get touched and they might come to know the One above (God).

@KJVBaptistGuy Dude, you seriously have to re-read your Bible. Unless you are an Anabaptist, then I can understand your stance - even though it is kind of misguided.

@Lupus27 He came and preached the Kingdom Gospel. But since the Jews rejected Him and had Him killed at the hands of the Romans, He stopped dealing with the Jews, so the Kingdom Gospel will come after the dispensation (period) of grace, the church age which we are in now, and after the tribulation, then the Kingdom Gospel comes in. Church age doctrine is in the Pauline Epistles. Read Rightly Dividing the Word of Truth by C.I. Scofield. Read II Timothy 2:15.

@KJVBaptistGuy So what did he come to preach? Because the word peace did come up in his ministry in a positive context a lot.

@Lupus27 It means that The Lord Jesus Christ did not come to preach peace and solidarity with everything and everyone, like the guy in this movie is doing standing on something while raising his fist and preaching peace and solidarity.

@KJVBaptistGuy What does that mean?

A similar message that the Lord Jesus Christ preached? Blasphemy.... The Lord Jesus Christ came to send peace on earth? Matthew 10:34 KJV and this is the Lord Jesus Christ speaking: "Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.' People who make films like this are in BIG trouble.
