In our feature documentary, "PROGRAMMING THE NATION?" we illustrate numerous examples of print advertisements that are believed to contain imbedded subliminal imagery, (according to the experts we talked to who originally discovered them). They consist mostly of things like the letters S-E-X, phallic symbols, death masks etc...
One of the most frequent questions I continually get asked is, "how does such subliminal imagery work to positively affect sales?" For some reason, most people, (even after watching the film), still don't understand, (or even want to believe), that its possible for skulls and penises to increase consumption. So, this blog article is dedicated to this topic in hopes of addressing this common missknowmer.
First and foremost, its important to clarify that subliminally imbedded "taboo" imagery is usually found in alcohol and tobacco ads. The following explanation only pertains to these two products.
On a conscious level, the ads are typically meant to convey positive associations with the product. Such as, smoking / drinking gives you "independence" makes you "sexier" will "attract" the opposite sex, allow you to have more "fun", etc...
But, on a subconscious level, by using disturbing subliminal imbeds, (such as those described above), the ads can also deliver a second layer of information that is meant to provoke deep seeded unconscious anxieties and/or neurosis.
The reason they do this is simple. Most people smoke and drink more when they're nervous. So, its only logical to assess that by increasing their anxieties or neurosis they could effectively increase consumption of these products.
In other words, the taboo subliminal imbeds are essentially used as subconscious "fear factors" to get people to drink and smoke more - without anyone having consciously realized it. UNTIL NOW!
This clip, edited from several sections of our documentary, "PROGRAMMING THE NATION?" may help illustrate this more effectively.
