The Isle of Wight in southern England once had an extensive rail system. Just imagine what if...

1) The Cowes-Newport-Ryde line was open today.
2) The Shanklin-Ventnor line was open today.
3) The 3rd rail electrification installation never happened.
4) The Brading-Bembridge line remains open for freight traffic to the harbour.

This is a fantasy late afternoon journey on a Class 166 Diesel. Leaving Cowes, the train proceeds to Newport and then to the junction with the Ryde-Ventnor line, along today's steam railway. It then proceeds to Ryde St John's, and to Ryde Pier where it reverses and returns to St John's (this part is not shown). The train then heads for Ventnor but our video then follows a Class 47 as it departs the Bembridge Harbour quayside and heads for the junction at Brading. Rejoining the DMU we proceed to Shanklin, still a through station, and then to Ventnor.

This route is a free one obtained via www.uktrainsim.com but it requires the commercial Isle of Wight add-on. The route was created by Ian Beeby, as an extensive full IOW steam age network. I've modified it slightly for this video, removing some old stock and vehicles, but it mainly retains a bygone appearance, with plenty of smoking chimneys, freight yards and semaphore signals.

The route actually includes the lines to Freshwater and Ventnor West not visited on this video (though you can see the junctions at Newport). I've concentrated mainly on the sections closed in the 1960s for this video; the aforementioned branches closed in the 1950s.

Recorded with Fraps at 1280x720 30fps this is best viewed in HD (720p).

  • i cant find the route on uktrainsim any link?

  • It's called "The Island Line". Select rail simulator and get the route list. The website is, I know, pretty poor.

  • i see you have rail simulator, and i have a few problems in which i hope you can solve for me:

    1. i have created my own route, added platforms(with labels) and my doors will not open,am i missing somthing or have you got any suggestions?

    2. when i press z my engines will not shutdown/startup,can you tell me if i am missing somthing or have you got any suggestions? thank you for your time

  • Sorry I'm not a RS route creator, and not much of a train driver either!

  • 0:30 you must NOT pass a signal that is not clear, did you have permission?

  • Well, I made the simulated run as authentic as possible; the driver didn't turn up, the toilets were blocked, the wrong kind of diesel fuel was used, and some signals were ignored!

  • We are an RMT branch but if the Isle of White railways had survived what's use of doing away with existing third rail. Fantasy is all very nice but stations would have been destaffed if buildings existed they would be in private ownership. Signage would have been SWT not southern green. Class 47 would have been out of gauge so would DMU never get through Ryde Tunnel. Signalling there wouldn't have been any Cowes would have been worked as a long siding so would Ventnor after Shanklin. Fantasy I

  • Simulation seems to pass semaphore signals at danger with regularity or they are in horizontal position with green lights. Multiple Right side failure be an S&T technician nightmare and if it was modern railway it wouldn't have semaphore at all it would all be powerbox signalling

  • That Good Railways In IOW. PULL OUT DR BEECHING !!!!!

  • I would have thought that South West Trains would operate the line..

  • @boeingnerd77 ...advanced controls to be able to use the engine commands, it also opens a few funky other controls too!

    Hope I helped,

  • @boeingnerd77 Make sure you create a platform marker (You can find these under the house section) Clic kany item visible in the list, cloick m, and scroll until you find Marker - Platform, then drop the marker next to the platform edge on the arail you want to create it for, and then drag the ends to extend it to the other side, if you accidentally click off, just click the little post in the middle of tyhe green line, and normal controls will be restored.-IMPORTANT- You MUST use...

  • I really would like this route but, on the uktrainsim website there are four assets which one do i have to download?

  • @boeingnerd77

1, you have to mark the rails at the station as "station rails"

    ;)

  • The reason the Ryde St John's to Esplanade section is not shown is that the DMU would get stuck in the very restricted tunnel! Hence the secondhand Tube trains of the electric era. Maybe the train sim has the equivalent of the railway modeller's Giant Hand In The Sky to deal with these eventualities - pick up the tunnel roof and then drive the train "through" - lol

  • @IvanMorgan1966everytime i click download it takes me to a new widow that says this Important: Please disable your download manager (e.g. GetRight, DAP etc) before proceeding, it will NOT work with non-premium downloading couldd you please help
