You know, I can never figure out if David intended this song to sound partially satirical. His songs dealing with religious issues are so deeply intruiging and thought provoking. I can't count the nights I've spent awake contemplating the things I've learned and compared with some of the messages David has put forth. I'm not saying he's a modern messiah, but he's definitely helped me step forward into spiritual freedom. Also, the bare music itself is so soothing to me. I always find comfort.

brilliant! When was this recorded, it is great seeing David's early recordings

makes me feel more positive in a way, as I find myself in a position to want to discuss God and struggle from a position of helping a brother. I hope that makes sense? Anywho, I will say that The Only Reason I Feel Secure is probably my favorite album of David's, but that his newer stuff holds a place in my heart as well--all of it is just an honest chronicle of the spiritual journey of this talented man, and new from old just adds honestly and complexity. A relationship with God is complex.

i simply couldn't agree with this more.

Sometimes the believing artist can start to worship the gift of art rather than the gift Giver. I'm aware now not to let myself get too carried away with the beautiful phrases of self-sufficiency, uncertainty, and hesitation in reference to my faith. I believe that for those who practice faith there are the good times and bad, but I've decided not to linger around in the darkness of doubt, its beautiful and maybe intriguing especially in the artist's journey of expression, but its dangerous.

certainly. i should have chosen my words better. experiencing darkness is a part of life for everybody but i just think his earlier music had a certain feeling of humility in it which produced a more confident lyricism, even when the overall message was still somewhat dark. when he began to change, so did his lyricism. i just feel something lacking in his later music, not just with the message but also just with the general quality of his singing, like he's lost something he once had.

Dark things aren't necessarily bad. Life isn't a bed of roses, so sometimes we've got to live in poop town.
But, I haven't heard any definite arguments from Bazan to question his faith, so I'm not sure what that "twist of faith" is all about. I hope he realizes there are Christians like me that are plenty OK with having a "Liberal" view on the Bible and on life...

interesting point of view. i think all people of faith do go through ups and downs and struggle with their testimonies at times. I think for me it's sad to see how empty he feels now and how betrayed he feels. I felt something different and positive in his earlier music. His current music may be honest and compelling but it feels dark and lost to me.But that's not my main criticism, mainly I just think his earlier music was more confident and positive lyrically rather than monotone and cynical.
On a note not concerning the music, the comments on all these pedro/david videos have been the most intellectual of ANY video on Youtube. I enjoy that.

thank you, it's kinda by design. i monitor all the comments and end up having to block a lot of jerks that just want to insult people - which is too common on youtube. there's really no need to be anything but civil and have constructive discussions. it's so much more enjoyable.
