I didn't hear about anyone getting hurt. I'm pretty sure everyone evacuated.
The fire alarm went off at about 1:20. My girlfriend and I thought it was a false alarm. We made our way down to the lobby and one of the employees said the building was on fire and everyone needed to get out.
We saw flames shooting out of the building when we got outside. I started taking pictures with my phone and that's when the explosion happened. It was really loud and caused everyone to run away from the fire.

That is Scary, Hope no one was hurt

So what happened to cause it? I always hate to think of fires in a high rise.

Everyone was not out of the building before the explosion happened. Also, the entire building was not gutted, as far as we know, damage was limited to that particular apartment and the one above and the one below. Chris and I live on the 8th floor (this fire was on the 11th) and we have absolutely no signs of damage in our apartment. Thanks for posting this!

Yes, I knew the fire just gutted the one apartment, and damaged the one to the left of it and the one above and water damage to the one below.
I live in the penthouse of the building facing you from across the street. I shot this video from my balcony. However, you need to be warned: This is the third major fire in this building in four years. First was the top floor, 2nd was a vendor downstairs last year, and now this one. Do you have a sprinkler system?

Oh, and I'm very glad that your place was not damaged! So they did evacuate the whole building?

Hi Chris. Did they evacuate everyone from the building during the fire? The Alexandria fire chief told me that the explosion was due to a propane tank stored on the balcony...and that the fire was accidental in nature. The entire apartment was gutted. Once the firemen got up to the apartment and got inside, it took them about twenty minutes to kill the fire. Water was shooting out like a waterfall to the ground below. I'm told the occupants got out before the explosion.
