My ancestors came from Prussia, but from the other side of my family we found a Hessian soldier from hundreds of years ago, he was married at Blessenbach castle and he died in Bayern!

@tresckow to abolish the title by no means make shte fmaily extinct most noble or royal families have von by there name. mine is Von Volland from bruanfels Hesse, conected to the House of soms-Nassau, so House of Volland-Soms-Nassau would be my house.

@Krizarmax1 Hello: My Mother's mother was named Schwartz (probably spelled differently in German.) I was told they came over to fight as Mercenaries. It means Black in German.

@Varyalover ....from Prussia and Russia and anywhere else they could impress men, convicts or ne'er do wells. There were only a few conscripts.

in Germany the law states that the princely titles are an integral part of one's name; hence Philip Prinz von Hessen, for example. Most of them survive: THURN,BADEN,HOHENZOLERN, ZEIL, HOHENLOHE, WIETELSBACH, WURTEMBERG, SAXE-COBURG, REUSS, OLDENBURG, NASSAU, LIPPE, etc,,,,,,to name a few..
