Here is a video of one of our fine competitors, demonstrating how a standing tricep extension is done.
The key is to keep a continuous motion, focusing on the use of the triceps, instead of rocking the back for momentum. If the weight is to heavy, you will compromise your form, so it's best to get something challenging, but that will prevent strain on the back.
When you come down, the arms should be at a 90 degree angle, and then extend upward as straight as you can, and repeat. It's also extremely important to keep the elbows in while performing it.
