When I was 14, back in the 80s, I got my first electronic keyboard- a Casio MT-100. I made lots of rudimentary dual cassette deck overdub recordings with it, little sketches of tunes that usually were never developed. I lent my MT-100 to Cindy Lee Berryhill years ago and never got it back, but recently I bought a Casio MT-400v at a garage sale. It has all the same sounds/functions as the MT-100, plus a much needed analog filter section!

This is a new recording of one of my original Casio tunes called "Casio Island" with my MT-400v. I didn't use the analog filter here, because I never had it on the MT-100 back in the day, and I wanted this version to be as close to the original as possible, just with better recording technology.

Recently I used this Casio in a live cover version of Yaz's "Nobody's Diary" with Marie Haddad singing. We just finished making a proper recording of it, again using only the Casio, though I used the computer to cheat alot! You can hear it at http://www.myspace.com/mariehaddad (5th song down).

You can hear the original version of Casio Island in all its tape-hissy glory here:

  • How did you overdub on the original cassette tapes?

  • @The2010SnowDay i had this toy boombox called the "star studio" that came with a little mic and was designed such that you could play a tape in one deck, and dub that to the other deck while adding either the mic or a line signal to it. so i plugged my casio into that, recorded the drums and the bass line, then played that tape back and added the trumpets, then played THAT tape back and added the lead line, etc. it was a common way to do "multi track" recording before 4-tracks became affordable.

  • Quon called me this morning about one of these , i said go for it because it's one of the very few of these types of casios (or maybe the only one ) that has an adjustable filter let alone an analog one, cant wait to try it out,
