Schon naht, um uns zu scheiden,
die letzte Stunde sich,
nun heißt es traurig meiden
mein Glück, mein Alles, Dich.

Doch bringet mir dies Scheiden
die gold'ne Freiheit ein,
und nach der Nacht der Leiden
glänzt neuer Sonnenschein.

Die Trennung soll nicht währen,
gar bald sind wir vereint
und durch die Trennungszähren
ein neues Glück uns scheint.

Der einstens allen Seelen
ein neues Leben giebt,
er wird auch uns nicht fehlen,
die wir so treu geliebt.

ADIEU!
Text: Bélanger
Musik: Franz Schubert
Vocal: Joel de Veyra
Piano: Klaus Simanek
Recorded: Vienna, ca. 1996

  • Very beautiful! Is it Dietrich Fischer-Diskau singing? I made a research and I understood that Bélanger was only the French translator of this poetry. Searching by the first verse (schon naht...) the original poetry seems to have been written by Friedrich Gottlob Wetzel, a German writer 18/19th century. It's not clear to me though.

  • Thank you, tatiana10, for you comment. No, it is not Fischer-Diskau singing but yours truly (am not as good as the famous baritone). Also, perhaps you are right that Wetzel could have written the text. Let me check. All the best!

  • Oh! Congratulations, MunichGermany for your interpretation of this beautiful song. You have a truly wonderful voice! I played your video times on end! :-)

I look forward to your confirmation about the writer. If you happen to know the French words by Bélanger (or where I could find them), please let me know as well, ok? Thank you SO much!

  • hi, there. i am afraid it was indeed Bélanger who wrote the text as indicated on the musical piece i had when i recorded this song. about the french text, i have no clue. no trace on internet either of wetzel having written the lyrics.
