The question was,

"If I, a man, were to eat cashews as I am, and I ate them like a man as I am, how many cashews did I eat just now?"

I fail to see how this is a trick question. He used the word "if" and he also qualified the possibility that he, a gnome would eat cashews if you consider he said if he "ate them like a man".

Consider: "If I a cow, were to eat grass as I am, and I ate it like a cow as I am, how much grass did I eat just now?"

Doesn't sound like a trick question there either.
