Frances has a book called Belly Button Book! We've been studying this text for awhile, so Frances has long been able to identify her own bellybutton, as well as that of other humans and at least one doll. One evening a couple of months ago, just for fun, Ted decided to ask, "Hey, Frances. Where are your toes?" Much to his surprise, she pointed to her toes. She also correctly identified her nose and ears, and she now knows where her mouth and fingers are (I forgot to ask about fingers while making this video).
This was somewhat astonishing to us—even a little eerie—because it's not like we've been drilling her on anatomical vocabulary. She's just been paying attention. We were excited by this discovery, but I also realized that I really, really need to watch the language. I don't think the moms at playgroup would find it charming or hilarious if Frances started teaching a master class on filthy swears to the other toddlers.
That's a smart baby! :)
