A visitor from Alaska, an Inupiat Native shared with us some Bowhead whale to eat. Muktuk is a section of its thick skin. It was an interesting experience for us to taste a whale and for our friend it is his way of life.
This is a cultural thing. It's not like they are doing it for commercial use. You aren't even allowed to sell any of the product that is caught. It's shared with the community of the areas that they catch it in, and some people really do depend on what is caught. This tradition has been going on for years, there are still thousands of whales in the ocean, and to add to it-- most whaling crews only catch a few per year. Don't be so ignorant when it comes to your, "Save the whales," talk.
I want narwhal meat.
