One of the icons of Venice, St Mark's bell tower could soon become the leaning tower of Venice. That's the fear of conservation architects in the city of canals who are moving quickly to repair the foundations of the bell tower as it approaches its 100th anniversary.
Their concern is that unless the repairs are made the tower could meet the same fate as its predecessor. The original St Marks bell tower collapsed in 1902 and unfortunately the fathers of Venice at the time decided to replace it using the same design, faults and all.
Reporter Josephine Cafagna meets the man commissioned to fix the problem Professore Giorgio Macchi, the same structural engineer who helped save the leaning tower of Pisa from collapse.
