@SpamNapkin i think these effects are produced by coloured oils mixed in the water with a lighting work. Same as 2001 A Space odyssey by S.Kubrick (1968).

I remember watching this film on TV in the mid 1980's and I still don't understand if he really turned into a cavemen and energy or just more hallucinations.
