The Labor Day showdown between Miami and FSU featured two impressive quarterbacks and two determined teams in a back-and-forth battle that wouldnt quit. But it was sophomore quarterback Jacory Harris and the Hurricanes who came out 38-34 winners Monday at Doak Campbell Stadium. It was a four-quarter fistfight, and we got the last punch, UM left tackle Jason Fox said. A game-ending goal-line stand by Miami prevented FSU and star quarterback Christian Ponder from completing a dramatic come-from-behind victory in the season opener for both teams. The Hurricanes winning score came with 1:53 left after Harris drove the Hurricanes on a six-play, 59-yard drive that culminated in a 3-yard touchdown run by tailback Graig Cooper. Receiver Travis Benjamin, who had a career-high 128 yards on four receptions, caught a 40-yard pass fromHarris to put UM on the 3-yard line and set up the score.Harris completed 21 of 34 passes for 386 yards and two touchdowns, with two interceptions. His passing yards were theost by a UM quarterback in a first start against FSU, and the most since Ken Dorsey threw 422 against West Virginia in 2002.And he did it with his throwing arm, ring finger and pinkie partially numb because of a hit he took from Seminoles cornerback Greg Reid in the final quarter.I was taking snaps on the sideline while A.J. [Highsmith] was warming up, Harris said. I fumbled the first one but I wasnt not going to go back in there.UM coach Randy Shannon, who described the game as one of the all-timers, said Harris reminded him a lot of [Steve] Walsh and [Ken] Dorsey. When asked about his heartbreaking history against Miami, FSU coach Bobby Bowden said, This will rank right up there with them. . . . We had a minute and 40 seconds left when we got the ball back. We took that thing and drove it and there was no doubt in my mind wed win it.But the problem was, there was no time to run. We could not run the stinkin ball.Behind
strong blocking from his experienced offensive line, Ponder also set a career high for passing. He completed 24 of 41 passes for 294 yards and two touchdowns, with one interception. His last-second attempt to receiver Jarmon Fortson in the end zone hit the ground as time expired. There were plenty of Maalox moments as the teams exchanged leads four times in the second half — and were tied once.FSU freshman kicker Dustin Hopkins sent a 45-yard field goal down the middle of the uprights to give FSU a 34-31 lead with 4:16 left.True freshman Reid hit Harris throwing arm as Harris delivered a fourth-quarter pass that was picked off by Markus White, who ran it back 31 yards for a touchdown. The Seminoles then got the two-point conversion to make it 31-24 with 11:45 left. But the Hurricanes charged right back. With 7:14 left, Harris lofted a 24-yard touchdown pass to Cooper to tie the score at 31 in front of the 81,077 crazed fans.Harris had scored on a 1-yard sneak with 13:48 left to put UM ahead 24-23.FSU scored on drives of 67, 46 and 82 yards. Ponders 21-yard touchdown pass to Taiwan Easterling late in the third quarter gave the Seminoles a 23-17 lead.
UM defensive end Marcus Robinson sacked and stripped Ponder of the football. Defensive end Josh Holmes recovered the fumble with 1:28 left in the third quarter. UMs defense was strong against the run, holding the Seminoles to 110 rushing yards.
The first half was mostly error-free, with the lone turnover coming on a Ponder pass that was picked off by UM safety Randy Phillips.
The Seminoles made it 16-14 on a zig-zagging, 10-yard scramble into the end zone by Ponder with 12:01 left in the third quarter. But Hopkins shanked the extra point wide left and FSU could get only six points.Miamis first touchdown of the season came on its opening drive, courtesy of a 39-yard pass down the middle from Harris to Benjamin. Benjamin, who almost single-handedly led the comeback that just fell short in 2008, was all alone.
