toyota corolla. less than 90k miles. came in for a no start. we put a distributor in it and it ran fine. Customer said oil light was coming on. didn't do that before we worked on it. Look at the sludge build up! Cam caps have over 1/2 inch of oil sludge stuck on top of them. Oil pan was full of sludge debris. The pick up screen was about 80% blocked.

  • end result after cleaning a lot of the crud out was that the oil pressure did return to normal but there was a knock under load. Told the customer to drive it until it dies and budget for motor replacement. Wouldn't recommend a crank and bearing replacement because there would probably be damage to cam journals and possibly cylinder walls (no oil pressure to cam journals and no splash on cylinder walls)

  • Also with a search of the vin# in the a shops shared computer system, the owner of the Tundra had the truck at another shop a few days earlier for the oil light flickering and was told the engine was toast due to oil sludge causing loos of oil pressure.

My sister said that a few of the Jury members wanted to give the guy a new $11,000-engine. The jury found in favor of the shop and the judge gave the shop $1800 in cost and $5000 in damages. It is amazing how people will try to cheat a business

  • My sister was in Jury duty for a law suit where someone tried to sue a shop for a new engine. It was a 2008 Toyota Tundra with 88,000 miles. They came to the shop and paid $65.00 for an oil change. Then 30-miles later the engine blew from "no oil", according to the truck owner. The victimized shop had to pay for a shop, in another town, to take the engine apart and testify over the sludge. Also the victimized shop has video tape showing the tech pouring in the correct amt of oil.

  • Oh, what happens when you don't use synthetic oil....and don't take care of your car.

  • This is criminal!

  • For how long did this engine run without oil? I know you said the car was 90k miles but when was the last time the customer made an oil change?

  • Whats oil? That green stuff?

  • motor GEL!

  • I loved when people would come into the shop with $10,000 worth of wheels and tires on their car but they wouldn't spend $75.00 on a synthetic oil change. I guess the pimp look is the only important thing to some folks. Stupidity.

  • Wow thats unbeleivable, only 90k?

  • syntectic or mineral that oil?
