Dragonball Z Super Collection Vol9 SS Son Gohan ドラゴンボールZ 超サイヤ人孫悟飯

It's September! Time for the conclusion to my nine-month tribute to the greatest set of Dragonball Z figures ever made! What better way to end this series than to end with the impossibly strong Super Saiyan Gohan!

So, where to begin?

It's pretty interesting to watch how the series has progressed through this set of figures. The first SSJ figure we saw was a battle tattered Goku from Namek. The second was a clean and sleek Vegeta (which was also...taller...for some reason). Then Trunks and now Gohan. Speaking of Gohan, the last time we saw a figure of him in this set...he was still a little boy (I like to think that Vol 4 of the Super Collection was made to correspond to DBZ Movie 6...which is probably my favorite of the movies). This figure really represents the beginnings of Gohan taking the reigns and becoming the central character for the series. Like a legendary soldier before he was sent to the battle that made him famous. In other words, a great way to end this line.

The figure itself is wonderful. The height is pretty much dead on, the sculpt is fantastic (though his hair is a litttttttle too Goku-esque at pretty much any angle), and the colors are bright and accurate. The Super Battle Collection figure (which also happens to be Vol. 9 there) has a slightly better hair sculpt, but lacks in everything else compared to this figure.

My only serious complaint is the cape. Piccolo had a similar problem...but not really. Instead of Piccolo's cape being removed by squeezing it over his head, Gohan's head has the be removed! As this figure is 16 years old as of this writing, you can imagine how uncomfortable I was removing such a delicate piece of old vinyl without it completely shattering in my hand. That would've been an expensive Boo-boo...

So to sum it all up...this is a fantastic way to end my favorite line-up of DBZ figures in the series' 20 year history. I really would've liked to have seen a few villains like Freeza, Nappa, and Jinzouningen 17 and 18 (a two pack of those would've been glorious) but it was not to be. This series never survived the mid-90s manufacturing shift to China and Thailand on Bandai's part...and it's a total shame. Bandai Japan could've pumped a handful of these out a year if they really wanted. We can be thankful for the Greatest Nine* that we did get.

WOO! SS Gohan! This is my MAN! Storngest in the UNIVERSE! This was going to be the end of DBZ, with Gohan at SS2 and the universe saved... but popular demand brought it all back... oh well!
