Sabrina Peric reads Mahmoud Darwish's "For My Mother" in Arabic & English at Harvard University, September 18, 2008. The event, a celebration of Darwish's life and work forty days after his death, was co-sponsored by the GSAS Alliance for Justice in the Middle East, the Harvard Center for Middle Eastern Studies, and Justice for Palestine at Harvard Law School.

  • I have heard many people referring to Mahmoud’s poem (My Mother) per the title, when in reality the title indirectly meant (My Country or My Palestine). Therefore the poem was a speech directed to Palestine from one of her sons (M. Darwish).

    And yes, indeed you can use it as a poem directed to your mother, if you wish, and that is the beauty of Mahmoud’s imaginations, because it fits the image of the reader. Instead of reading a poem, you’ll be reading your poem.
