I suffered from this and got the hard word from my doctor that I was close to being diabetic. I went on a strict vegan diet and did 1/2 hour of treadmill work daily, without fail. All risk factors went down into an average range within 6 weeks.

Yep, I defintely have metabolic syndrome, Let myself go a bit. I Stopped all junk and am exercising, scale does not want to budge. Even 5 years ago, if I would have done the same thing, pounds would have dropped quickly. Thick abdominal fat, high BP, high LDL, low HDL, prediabetic fasting glucose levels if I start eating too many carbs, just to name a few of the symptoms I have. No ones fault but my own. Carbs are very problematic for me, eat too many and I get constant painful hunger. Cheers!

Arthur Agatston, M.D.'s book "The South Beach Diet" explains Metabolic Syndrome/pre-diabetes and how Insulin Resistance causes us to have cravings and over eat. He is a Cardiologist who developed the diet for his patients and not to write a "diet" book. It is well worth reading.
