  • That is definitely MARION WILLIAMS, NO DOUBT. In 1954 the only two versions who topped the charts were: Eartha Kitt's on Feb.13,1954 and reached 16th pos. for some 4 weeks and was part of the "Copacabana Show"; I have it and it's as far as Sinatra is to Elvis if compared to this one. The other one was Georgia Gibbs'version which hit the charts on March 20th,1954 reaching the 18th position for 4 weeks.

Marion didn't chart, but to me is the best of all. Thanks a lot for posting it.

  • I grew up listning and singing this as a little girl.I'm 37 now. It was my mom's and my first intro to colipso or jamacian rythms. I love this song, needs to be re-recorded by some one.Maybe I'll do it.

  • I was FASCINATED by this song when I was a kid. I had it (well, it was my parents' record first) on a 78 as well, though the version I had had a lot more instrumentation in the background.

  • This song was a hit in Japan, sung in both English and Japanese. Odd as that seems to English-speaking people, there was a lot of that going on for decades in Japan with American (and other) songs. Look at the other YouTube listings on this screen, on the right, and you'll see a version from a Japanese movie, sung by Chiemi Eri.

  • This is not Eartha Kitt. She has a version Somebody bad stole de wedding bell(who's got the ding dong). Her voice is also very distinct and I am positive this is NOT eartha. Check out I want to be Evil by eartha ... and compare her voice.

  • That's correct I have a 78 rpm copy by Eartha Kitt on the RCA Victor Label

  • My 72-year-old neighbor had a 4-song 78 rpm microgroove EP (1950's) with this on it! Different artist.

It gets stuck in the groove at one point, and that's one of my favorite parts. Rund-dit-da>>>Rund-dit-da>>>>Rund-dit-da>>>Rund-dit-da...

  • Yeah, Definetly a different Marion Williams,,,It took me a minute to realize that Ray Charles, and the Ray charles Singers werent the same ..same situation, id guess

  • I see that your record says Marion Williams but Marion Williams was a gospel artist. That recording is actually Eartha Kitt from Jules Podell's Copa Cabana Revue of 1954. That song was written by Bob Hilliard and Dave Mann.
