It's not a matter of falsifying data. Data must be accurate so they won't be liable.
Thing is, you're rarely given any details as to what race, religion or socioeconomic background the people they count in their statistics are from. For example, you're far more likely to get an anti-abortion result if you take a poll from 1,000 30+ blacks in Mississippi than from 1,000 20+ whites in California.
They know what the statistics are like before they do the survey.

@AntitheistPOV I agree. Going into a study with the intent of getting specific statistics, regardless of the data you recieve is called misrepresenting the statistics; which is what I've been saying all along.
-
@Connectification1993 ...he didnt say anything. He started wtih saying "I...." but then he let West finish his statement.

I don't think Bill was saying everyone in Mississippi is stupid. Otherwise the joke about the Lesbian would not have made sense. Citing some exceptions does not alter the joke at all. This state was just polled and over 50 percent of them thought interracial marriage should be illegal. You're allowed to point out the idiocy of large groups of people without meaning every person connected with this group was a target.

@philster00700 Wait. Do you seriously think the Democratic party is left of centre? Most of them are RIGHT of centre.
-
Often they do. That doesn't change the fact that there are thousands of professional statisticians that will all come up with different results depending on who is paying them and the result they're looking for.
Princeton professor Cornel West is one of my favorite guests on Real Time.
Whether if I agree with him or not, I am always entertained by his demeanor and am able to to appreciate his point of view due to the eloquence in how he states it.
