@brassbend seriously though. For most professional orchestras I'll bet the fourth horn player gets in auditioning on this solo. I think they deserve their chance.
My local community *chamber* orchestra played the 9th this year, as crazy as it sounds. Who got to play the 3rd movement solo? I did. Also all the other solos and important bits, since I was the only horn. Not well, to be sure, and not the written low G (F for horn in F, played open on the Bb side of a double horn, easy for a low horn player, but not for a nervous high horn player like myself).
It is a psychological thang. Yes the 4th can certainly play it but are they use to the pressure a long solo has with it? The principal is there because he isn't going to cave on such things, he should be the best player in the section so give him the solo.
Obviously sarah willis plays this solo now. The choice of who the solo goes to, whether it be the 4th horn or solo horn, is usually up to the conductor not the players. but mad props to stefan since he can play that low c quite well.
Alot of the times, the decision comes from the MD. I played Beet. 9 last week and the principal moved down and played 4th the whole time so I got to play principal and do those solos.
i complain,,,,,,,,when i was 4th horn player,,,,the first horn player waned to play the 4th horn solo,,,,,,, but said my rights and i played it^^,,,,,,,,,i think that Dohr most to let other to play
este es un momento de gloria para el 4to, es nuestro unico gran momento de todo el repertorio, es el sueño de cualquier trompa grave
