English translation of the meanings:
Allâh! Lâ ilâha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists. Neither slumber, nor sleep overtake Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on earth. Who is he that can intercede with Him except with His Permission? He knows what happens to them (His creatures) in this world, and what will happen to them in the Hereafter . And they will never compass anything of His Knowledge except that which He wills. His Kursî extends over the heavens and the earth, and He feels no fatigue in guarding and preserving them. And He is the Most High, the Most Great. [This great Verse 2:255 is called Ayat-ul-Kursî.]
Ubaay bin Ka'b ( Abdul-Mnthir) said : Allaah's Messenger (صلي الله عليه وسلم ) said: O Aba Munthir! Do you know the aayah from the book of Allah which, according to you, is the greatest? I said: (( اللَّهُ لا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ)) Allah, none has the right to be worshiped but He, the Ever-living, the One Who is established on His Won, Self-subsisting, by whom all things subsist. Thereupon he struck me on my breast and said: May knowledge give you joy, O Abal Munthir! [ See Saheeh Muslim bi-Sharh Al-Imam an-Nawawi (رحمه الله ) Beirut , Lebannot: Darr al-Marifah, Ist. Ed 1414/1994], vol. 6 , no 1882, p. 334. This reference contains Saheeh Muslim with a commentary by Imam an-Nawawiرحمه الله ].
When you lie down in your bed, recite ayat al-Kursi, Allah! La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists [al-Baraqah 2:255] until the end of the ayah, then you will have a protector from Allah and no shaytan (devil) will come near you until morning comes
[Sahih al-Bukhari]
It is reported by way of Abu Hurairah (radiAllahu anhu) that someone used to come upon him and take from the charity which the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) had made him guardian over night, so on the third night, he said: "I will report you to the Messenger of Allah (salah Allahu alayhi wasalam), the man said: 'Let me teach you some phrases with which Allah will cause you benefit. He said: 'When you go to bed, read Ayat al-kursi (Verse 255 of Surah Al-Baqarah) completely, for there will be upon you from Allah a guardian, and no shaitan can get close to you until you enter upon morning.' Then he (salah Allahu alayhi wasalam) said: "He told you the truth and he is a liar, (that was a shaitan).[Sahih Al-Bukhari]
(1) The Prophet () described it as the greatest aayah in the Quraan.
(2) In it, Allaahs Greatest Name (ismullaahi al-atham) is mentioned.
(3) It protects from the shayaateen (sing. shaytaan, English: Devil).13
(4) The believer who recites it following an obligatory salaah is under the Care and Protection of Allaah until the commencement of the next prayer.14
(5) The one who recites it after each of the obligatory prayers, then death will be the only thing [i.e. barrier] preventing him from entering al-Jannah.
