Anime Expo 2009 - Cashier makes Sonic ring sound on ring up

I was buying a bottle of vitamin water and I was surprised to hear the sonic ring sound instead of a beep when she scanned an Item! not edited. Legitimately at a random gas station between San Francisco and Los Angeles

It sort of pisses me off that they blatantly ripped off the iconic ring collect sound. At the same time, if it was just a big Sonic fan who programmed it in, then it is a pretty cool nod to the series.

I go to school at Texas A&M and every register at all the convenience stores on campus make this sound. As well as many gas stations. It's pretty common.

Every single gas station in the Bismarck-Mandan (North Dakota) area does this. EVERY. FUCKING. ONE. Driving me mad. I swear if I hear it a hundred times I'll get a 1-up or something.

I guess the people who programmed these cash registers had the ingenious idea of using that sound effect for ring ups and are major Sonic The Hedgehog fans. I've yet to hear a cash register that uses the old school Super Mario Bros coin sound effect.
