This is another version of the mini guitar amp project I made about a year ago. This amp uses the same LM386 Audio Amplifier as the last one. The circuit to make the audio amp work can be made on a single General Purpose IC PC Board from RadioShack (#276-159) using all parts available off the shelf. All the amp components are mounted on a board just for display. Check out http://www.mybitbox.com/2009/02/guitar-amp-project/ for more on this project.
Yeah yeah, not Eddie Van Halen I know. Also, I have the speaker outside an enclosure for display so the bass is kinda lost.

PRO TIP: use heavier less clicky plectra, then learn to hold it properly, thus making your life easier and my ears happier.

What is the value of the Rheostat/potentiometer?

I have built that once. It was not loud enough so I used four medium power transistor. two NPN and two PNP. The challenge was making a voltage source that had negative and postive output. Since the LM386 is not really a balanced amplifier it did not do very well with the booster I made. So I had to use a 741 and added another stage in between. The whole amp increased to 60 amp max output.

have you tried it with a 4x12 cab yet?

That's so cool man. I made one like these using LM386. It's a useful IC for a portable mini guitar amp.
