Believed to be built on sacred earth with miraculous healing powers, the legendary shrine El Santuario de Chimayó, is probably the most visited church in New Mexico. The crucifix which began the original shrine still resides on the chapel alter, but for some reason its curative powers have been overshadowed by El Posito, the "sacred sand pit" from which it sprang. Each year during Holy Week thousands of people make a pilgrimage to Chimayó to visit the Santuario and take away a bit of the sacred dirt. Pilgrims walk a few yards or a hundred miles. Chimayó is located 40 miles south of Taos and 24 miles northeast of Santa Fe, about ten miles east of Espanola in the Sangre de Cristo mountains.

  • Of course white people are welcome as are all people at the small church which is about an hour from Santa Fe. I have been to Chimayo a number of times and have felt looked down upon because I am white. Everyone I talked to during my visits were friendly and helpful. They only ask that you behave respectfully and honor the tradition and magic of the Church and the surrounding grounds.

  • i heard that about a place in new mexico where people get sand from a church and it heals them and the sand replenquishes mysteriously is this that place

  • Yes. This is the place you describe. You can get full details with a Google search of "Chimayo"

  • This is one of the most powerful sacred places I have ever been. Thank you so much for the beautiful video. You really "captured" the sense of place, the healing and the power. What a thrill to find this little treasure.

Mil gracias! I lived in Espanola for over 5 years and attended St. Stephens. I went to the local Catholic churches there with and for my former students. Thank you for your welcome. God Bless!

  • Are White people accepted there? Will they be looked down upon because they're not hispanic? It seems that hispanics don't want Caucasians in NM.
