I think it would have been easiest for TF to explain it something like this:
God hardening Pharoah's is a subtractive action, not additive.
What I mean by this is that in order to harden Pharoah's heart, God lifted his grace away from Pharoah. God normatively graces the evil and the good with common grace. God graced Pharoah upto the time of hardenings. When God would harden his heart, it would be by not gracing him to do good.
Turrentin ... why not use Proverbs 21:1 (ESV)
The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the LORD; he turns it wherever he will.
