host: what do you want to tell through the movie? what is that you mostly want to tell the audience?

Dir: Personally I want to use my movie techniques to complete a portrait of Master Wu. I have not thought of

others like preaching big. Master wu clearly has only one thought --- "the truth & Go" throughtout his life. Other than that, Master Wu especially hopes for world-peace & Sino-Japanese friendship. Therefore, I believe

his philosophy are revealed in his attitudes, daily life.

Having read & seen the professional players competiting, Like Master Wu vs. Minoru Kitani, when they should be the world top-guns.

They were miraculously precisive, their works were just like fine pieces of art. Therefore, I feel Go [Wei-Qi] is not for common people.

I can only be a fan.

host: Mr Tian, how is your Go technique [Wei-Qi]? I guess you are also a high-hand since you have made such a

great Go movie?

Dir: This is the only wrong question you have asked. My Wei-Qi is equivalent to the BeiJing old saying "chou-qi-wei-zi",

that means I peek through Wei-qi through the entry door-slit. I only know the basics like, how many

chess on the board, 19-lines straight to cross etc.

No matter what kind of setting of the movie, it comes back to the basics: which spiritual level of Master Wu to be revealed.

Eventually I chose to retrieve the essence --- the essence of Master

Wu to be revealed. I want to film for something deep in his heart & mind instead of producing a documentary of history, or time.

It is impossible [to reveal the real time truth correctly]. And it could distort the history in return.

Regarding Master Wu's story cinemography, there were many options. Rather, there could be many portraiting options. I have thought of many ways to direct the story,

for example, chronological, or biographical setting. Also, use real-life figures mixing up with actors etc. Thought of it a long time.

host: Why would you choose WQY for a movie?

Dir: In my oppinion, Master Wu's been unknown to the public but indeed a great Chinese. You might have heard his words, "My life has only the truth & Go." I admire men having dedication to belief or career. Today our public attention towards this spirit is diminishing. Besides, Master Wu has his charisma; when get toegther with him, you're especially calm, peaceful; this is wordless. I.E. his great story will make a great movie.

Today we'll introduce a movie of Wu-Qing-Yuan (WQY, Go Sei Gen).

In 1928, 14, WQY came to Japan to become a professional Go player. Then he married & started his career.

The movie was taken in Japan. Many Japanese actors have taken part in.

When Sino-Japanese war broke out, WQY struggled in between but endeavored to continue his Go.

He focused on Go of which being his fate.

It potraits WQY uniquely on his efforts in pioneering modern Go in early 20th century
