Both of them should have poisoned the costume designer. Horrible dresses that make them look so fat. Great singing, though!

Operatic hysteria of the first magnitude. Both singers obviously enjoy this glorious opportunity to go completely over the top. This is melodrama so lurid that it verges on self-parody--but then this may be exactly what Ponchielli intended. Gulin is very impressive, as ever.

Yes - indeed stunning performances for both artists! But Angeles Gulin remains a magnificent singer - abominably under-rated, and seemingly ignored by most! A fabulously sumptuous voice! Troubled with terrible medical issues throughout her career - but good God what a voice! Listen to her in Verdi's Oberto, Stiffelio, Aroldo and Alzira - all thankfully captured on CDs. This was a major talent - and a simply a magnificent sound - that never made the top rung of success!
